There is a little-known and preserved ancient street in Moscow, which can be likened to an open-air museum. Varvarka Street holds a claim to be the oldest street in the capital. In the Middle Ages, it was from here that the path to Vladimir, the spiritual capital of those years began. On this street, Dmitry Donskoy rode into the Kremlin, returning from the Battle of Kulikovo, victory in which foretold the fate of the unification of Russian lands. On Varvarka, there are chambers in which the most beautiful Moscow boyar had a son who went on to become the ancestor of the Romanov dynasty.
Do you want to see what Moscow was like in the 16th century? Come with us on a tour of Varvarka!
Walking along one of the most interesting streets of the capital, almost unfamiliar to tourists, you will learn:
- How Kitai-Gorod (Chinatown) originated in Moscow, who was worshiped in Zaryadye and where the Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich was born.
- Why Ivan the Terrible loved English merchants, and Alexey Tishayshy saw that they were disbanded overnight.
- Who was expected to visit the Gostiny Dvor, and which types of hospitality would we certainly not have been pleased with.
- Of the fate that befell the eighth of Stalin’s skyscrapers and many more interesting things.
We will talk about sages and holy fools, rich men and revolutionaries, soldiers and peacekeepers, whose names are forever inscribed in memory of this unique corner of Moscow. There is nothing equal to Vavarka in the whole of Russia, never mind in Moscow, because here lies a whole virtually untouched Medieval quarter with boyar chambers and wonderful temples.
We invite you on an exciting journey into the depths of centuries gone by!
