Moscow has not just one Kremlin, but two! As well as the world-famous Kremlin, the centre of government, where generation after generation of Tsars were crowned and buried, there is also the spectacular Kremlin in Izmailovsky park. Coming here is like going on a journey back in time to an age where not just peasants’ houses but royal palaces and whole cities were constructed of wood and brightly painted. This colourful fairy tale palace on the shore of a lake was built fairly recently, in 2007, but it very quickly won a place in Muscovites’ hearts and is a popular venue for weddings.
A wooden bridge links the Kremlin with the spectacular Flea and Craft Market next door, where you will find everything from old cameras, gramophones and Russian military hats to hand-made Christmas tree decorations, beautiful painted trays and wooden jewelry boxes, and of course matryoshkas to suit every taste. Craftsmen and women come here from all over Russia to sell their work. Make sure you bring your camera and a shopping bag!
