The world has never been short of eccentrics, visionaries and dreamers: artists, performers, scientists and writers who delight in surprising their public. And, of course, that also applies to the architects and designers who shaped the cities we live in, and the patrons who commissioned their work. We may not always remember their names, but their legacies continue to fascinate and delight us centuries after they have passed away. We invite you to discover some of Moscow’s most unexpected buildings with us.
You will see:
- A wide variety of unusual buildings, which have one thing in common: in one way or another they break the normal rules of taste or undermine our stereotypes about the past.
- You will hear stories about great architects and their patrons, and how they have shaped Moscow’s streets with their strange and often flamboyant projects. Very often it is just this strangeness that has caught the public’s imagination and guaranteed the survival of these buildings while their more ordinary neighbours were demolished.
- You will be charmed by buildings whose unusual shapes have earned them colourful popular names: the Steam Train, the Egg, the Beehive, the Pagoda and the Fairy Tale Buildings, among others. Many surprises await you as our guide leads you through Moscow’s main streets and quiet alleyways and learn about these buildings’ history.
These architectural curiosities may not all be beautiful, in the normal sense of the word, but they are certainly not boring. Discover with us the work, and the stories, of many of the eccentrics, both famous and nameless, who left their mark on Moscow!
